My experience during the 10 day Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2013 was spectacular. The Chinese Buddhist festival is a celebration of vegetarianism, but the piercing rituals followed by the morning processsions through town draw many international visitors as well. There seems to be a contest amongst participants to see who can pierce themselves with the most unusual objects.
After the morning procession has finished there is so much delicious vegetarian food to choose from it is almost impossible to decide what to try first. It is amazing the things that can be done to tofu and vegetables. I joined the masses and wore all white too to help respect their traditions an blend in a little. The evenings were filled with activities at various temples, including firewalking, climbing ladders made of blades, and fireworks. So many fireworks.
If you love festivals this is definitely one to see!
